The clearest sign is fog or moisture trapped between the panes that you cannot wipe off from either side. That is seal failure and it cannot be repaired. The window still works as a window, but the insulating gas is gone and so is most of what you paid for. Other signs: a draft you can feel with your hand on a cold day, a sash that will not stay up or takes real effort to move, rot you can press a thumbnail into on a wood frame, and dirt or daylight tracking in around the edges. Condensation on the inside surface of the glass is a different thing and it is often a household humidity problem rather than a window problem, so check that before anyone sells you eight windows over it.

What's the difference between U-factor and SHGC?

Accepted Answer

They are the two numbers on the sticker that actually matter. U-factor is how much heat escapes through the window. Lower is better and it is the one that counts most in an Omaha winter. SHGC, or Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, is how much of the sun's heat comes through the glass. Lower keeps you cooler in July, higher gives you free warmth in January, so it is a real tradeoff rather than a best answer. Omaha sits in what ENERGY STAR calls the North-Central zone. To be ENERGY STAR certified here under the current version 7.0 criteria, a window needs a U-factor of 0.25 or lower and an SHGC of 0.40 or lower. Ask to see the NFRC sticker with those numbers printed on it instead of taking a salesperson's word for the rating.

Are vinyl windows worth it?

Accepted Answer

For most Omaha homes, yes. Vinyl does not rot, never needs painting, insulates well, and costs meaningfully less than fiberglass or wood, which is why it is on most of the houses around here. Two things to know before you buy. Vinyl expands and contracts more than other frame materials, so installation quality matters more than it does with something more stable. And cheap vinyl in a dark color on a hot south wall is where you occasionally see warping over the years. Fiberglass is more dimensionally stable and costs more. Wood looks the best and asks the most of you. Honestly, the frame material matters less than whether the window was installed square and flashed properly.

Can I replace windows myself to save money?

Accepted Answer

You can, and the savings are usually smaller than expected while the risk is larger. Setting the window is the easy part. The hard part is flashing the opening so that water getting behind the siding drains back out instead of into your wall, and that failure does not announce itself for two or three years, by which point the sheathing is soft and it is no longer a window job. A straight insert replacement into a sound existing frame on the first floor is a reasonable weekend project for a careful person. Full frame replacement, anything on a second story, or anything where you find rot once it is open, get help. Also check whether a permit is required before you start rather than after.

Does window replacement qualify for any tax credits?

Accepted Answer

Not federally, not anymore. The federal energy efficiency credit that covered 30 percent of qualifying windows up to $600 a year ended for anything placed in service after December 31, 2025. If your windows went in during 2025 or earlier you may still be able to claim it on that year's return, so ask whoever does your taxes. For work done now, budget as though there is no federal credit, because there is not one. Be careful with any contractor still using a tax credit as a reason to sign today. Manufacturer promotions and utility rebates do come and go, and we will tell you if a real one applies to what you are actually buying. We are not going to price a job around a credit that no longer exists.
