No. Your insurer can recommend someone from their preferred program, and a recommendation is not a requirement. Who works on your house is your call.
This comes up on nearly every claim, and the wording people hear is often softer than the reality. "We can get someone out to you" sounds like a plan being made on your behalf. It is an offer, and you can decline it.
Neither of those makes the other one dishonest. It is a real tradeoff, and reasonable people pick differently.
Get more than one scope. Not more than one price, more than one scope. Two contractors quoting different numbers for different work is not a comparison. The scope is where the difference lives, and it is where things get left out.
Your deductible is the same. Your coverage is the same. Whether you have replacement cost or actual cash value coverage is the same. Using an independent contractor does not reduce what your policy owes you, and any suggestion otherwise is worth questioning.
Either way, we work directly with your adjuster. That part does not change.
Whoever you use, do not sign anything that hands your claim over to the contractor. Assignments of benefits can give a contractor the right to deal with your insurer and collect your claim money directly, and they can be hard to undo. That risk exists regardless of whose list the contractor came from.
No pressure either way. Comparing two honest scopes is just good practice. We will reach out within one business day to set up your free in-person inspection.
